People come to Wendling looking for something. Seeking secrets that itch in your blood. Unknowable creatures. Somewhere to hide or start again. Control over the things beyond understanding. Answers to the mysteries that haunt the shadows. And now you? Wonder what you’re looking for? The Echo can hear you. The Echo knows when you’re coming. When you walk out of that door. When you descend into the Breach. It will have you. The Echo knows what you want, and by God it’ll give it to you or kill you trying.

Since at least 1872, the Order of Restitution and later the Restitution Agency have been in contact with an extradimensional presence known in records as The Echo. What is known about the Echo remains largely classified to only the highest ranks of the Restitution Agency, with some knowledge held only by the Director himself.
Whether you know about the Echo through your work for the Restitution Agency or through whispers only, its existence impacts all who enter the Control and Management Building. Both because the Director consults the Echo for guidance and because you can’t escape its influence inside the building.
What is generally understood, or might be surmised by enterprising types about the Echo:
- The Echo can but does not always communicate through anomalies. This is not limited to objects within the CAM, one might encounter the Echo’s presence anywhere in the world.
- The Echo appears in and appears to create anomalies but is not present in or the source of all anomalies.
- The Echo’s communications are often cryptic and hard to understand.
- The Echo is not always united in thought, some may theorize it is one communication from multiple presences, others simply see it as an alien consciousness trying to translate to our own.
- Prolonged contact or communication with the Echo can lead to a condition known as Distortion, where one’s perception of the world is altered in inexplicable ways. Eventually this may manifest in physical ways.
- To combat distortion all employees of the RA interact with The Echo in limited or obfuscated ways when possible, ie; messages are communicated through memo rather than allowing direct interaction with an attuned anomaly.
- The Echo’s presence is strongest in the CAM over any other place in the world, which is likely the reason for the location of the building and the Agency.
- Some may theorize that the Echo is the primary force in the CAM, creating the building shifts and other anomalous activity within the building itself.
- The Echo responds best to ritual and repetition. It often communicates itself through mimicry or repetition in message or medium, thus the Echo.
- For reasons unknown, the Echo seems invested in the hierarchy of the RA, appointing the Director, as well as in furthering the finding of Anomalies. Locations surfaced from the Echo are high priority cases.
- Discussion of the Echo is strictly prohibited and limited by clearance level.
