Yes this game will have some mechanics! They’re fairly simple but meant to give a little randomness to generating plot and provide interesting developments in the game each month.

Dice Rolls

At the start of each month you’ll roll some dice as part of your activity check. These dice will determine some of the actions you can take that month.

In general, you’ll roll 1d10 for each character you have. So if you have 3 characters you’ll roll 3d10 and report the results.

Some activities may give you an extra dice role for that month including:

  1. Signing up to do an event these might be social events, missions, or an event happening as a result of exploring The Cam. Essentially if you’re volunteering to do an IC/OOC you’ll get an extra die to roll for that month for each activity you run. (Yes even if it’s just a social gathering.)
  2. Inventing an NPC that month. Roll 1d10 for each NPC you add to the roster. See this page for details on adding an NPC.

Using Dice

Think of your rolled dice as the capability your character has that month to accomplish something. Your dice rolls are not locked to a character, but you can only use each roll once before it’s used up. You can use dice for the following monthly actions:

Open a locked door.

Research and remember.

Participate in a field mission.

Rebuild Wendling.

The way this happens means you’ll have ultimate control over what your character is doing, but we’re still introducing a random element. See the below example:

Kate has three characters, Olive, Marcus, and Sasha, so she rolls three dice at the start of March, she’s also volunteered to run a mission that month so she’ll add one die to the pool. The four total dice give her the following results:

3, 8, 5, 1

Kate wants to send at least one character on a mission this month and she’s interested in opening some doors. Looking at the list of doors still locked she sees that there is a door with a 3 and a door with an 8.

She decides to have Marcus and Sasha both open doors because they’re really invested in finding other people. That leaves her the following dice:

3, 8, 6, 1

Kate decides to send Olive on a mission, she could give her the 1 if she wanted it to be a really catastrophic time for Olive, but Olive had a tough month last month so she’ll put her 6 in for the mission. This means it’s a Success at a Cost. Kate will decide what that means for Olive when she decides which mission to send her on and sees how it goes later on in the month.

This leaves the 1! There are no doors that can be opened with the 1 right now but Kate decides that Marcus whose particularly community oriented will work on restoring some of the damaged houses. The 1 brings up the state of repair in the town from 88 to 89.

Rolling Modifiers

Sometimes you’ll be able to add a modifier to your dice. This usually means you’ll be given a +1, -1, +2, or -2. These will let you better fit the dice to your various needs.

When to Modify

You’ll receive a modifier in the following cases:

Worried about remembering when to roll a modifier? Don’t be! You’ll be reminded each month what to look for to be able to use a modifier. And if you forget? That’s okay too! These are just an option to add a little flexibility. Be sure to think about narratively what is going on when you apply one of these. Are they exceptionally good because of passion? Feeling scared because of past experiences?

If you feel like your character should be able to apply a modifier, just bring that up! It’s a flexible system not hard and fast rules.

Rolling to Succeed (Optional)

On some occasions you may want to employ a roll in the more traditional sense. Perhaps you’re running a Mission IC/OOC and you want the characters to roll on some specific tasks or you’re undecided if your character should be successful or unsuccessful at something. The point of the game is to be collaborative augmented by some random chance! So feel free to introduce your own instances of chance out there. Maybe there’s some specific anomaly from your character’s past you want to do an encounter with? Sure! When it comes to these types of rolls, you can make up your own system if you desire. But if you don’t desire here’s an easy one:
